As part of its drive to tackle tool theft crime, Van Vault, the originators of in-vehicle secure storage, has launched a market leading new product range for 2019.
The launch follows 18 months of development work and features eight new products offering advanced protection against tool theft, including the traditional box style containers and the easy to use drawer Sliders. The upgraded range underwent considerable research and rigorous testing, to ensure it provides the most effective deterrent to tool theft.
Not only has the product been enhanced with additional security features, it has been tested and certified by Sold Secure, an independent test house for security products owned by the Master Locksmith Association. All eight Van Vault’s were subjected to six levels of sustained attack for over 30 minutes by trained professionals and were all found to be impenetrable.
Van Vault is also the first vehicle storage product on the market to be accredited by Secured by Design - the UK’s Police approved standard. Products are subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security related products in the UK.
Last year saw around 280,000 tool theft crimes across the UK. With the average value of tools left in tradespeople’s vans costing £2,880, Van Vault understands the importance of helping protect tools and deter thieves with effective secure storage solutions. With a break-in taking as little as 10 seconds, the new range has introduced key enhancements, which will be fundamental in making it much harder to steal valuable power tools and equipment.

We were delighted to be part of an elite group of brands and manufacturers invited to attend ATLAS 2019, Secured by Design’s (SBD) two-day annual, national Crime Prevention event in the Cotswolds.
SBD is a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention initiatives. This exclusive event is attended by crime prevention design staff who are based in police forces around the country. Around 300 Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) attended – who all deliver SBD at a local level.It is a unique opportunity for officer training and to share best practice across forces.
Van Vault was present for the first time, having only recently been accredited by SBD for our new Van Vault range. Scruffs has scooped a double win at the 'On The Tools' Awards! The event, celebrating the best of the construction industry, took place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Thursday 1st November.
On the Tools (OTT) has grown rapidly to become the UK's biggest construction-related online community with 2.7 Million followers, and over 70% of them are tradespeople. Nominated in two categories, Scruffs won both 'Boot Brand of the Year' and 'Workwear Brand of The Year'. Decided by public vote, the awards are a fantastic reinforcement for Scruffs from the people that really matter to the brand, namely tradespeople.

The NMBS event is the number one buying and selling event in the Independent Merchants calendars. Each year the event goes from strength to strength, with record numbers of visitors year on year. The event is great for independent merchants to meet the suppliers - all 280 of them!

On Thursday 25th January, Matt Hunt (BPT, MD) met with Tracey and Darren Parker of Ben’s Den - BPT’s 2017 chosen charity to hand over a cheque of over £4000 on behalf of BPT.
Ben’s Den offers the families of children fighting cancer or leukaemia the chance to heal, recuperate and create happy memories by the seaside in a safe and comfortable place. The charity was set up in 2004 in memory of Ben Parker (the son of Tracey and Darren) who was just 10 years old when he was diagnosed with the disease.
He was described by his parents as a strong and determined little boy, and, with the support of his family, he bravely fought his illness for three years.
Throughout 2017, various fundraising initiatives undertaken by the BPT team, including cake sales and sponsored walks in the Peak District, helped to raise £4,000 to support this very deserving charity. The money raised will go towards yearly fees and maintenance for one of the caravans.
Matt commented, “this is a fantastic cause BPT has supported over 2017. We had some great fundraising initiatives from the BPT Easter Bake Off to skydiving - All to raise money to support the continuation of the work that Tracey and Darren are doing.”

Scruffs won the double at the 'On The Tools' Awards! The event took place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Friday 20th October, with some of the biggest names from the construction industry present.

Birchwood Price Tools is pleased to announce the arrival of Gary Hutchins as its new Sales Director.
Gary has joined BPT from Rexel, where he was Regional Director for electrical wholesalers WF Senate.
Gary brings with him over 20 years sales experience within a wholesaler and distribution background, having previously worked with many national corporate blue chip customers from the facilities management and end user sectors. In joining BPT, he intends to bring this knowledge to the supplier side in order to further strengthen BPT brands and products as ‘must stock’ items.
Gary says: “What excites me are the strong brands and the quality of the products BPT offer and the opportunity to take these brands into new distribution channels.”
Gary’s priorities are to understand customers’ needs, to ensure BPT is proposing solutions which will help them to grow their businesses, and to understand the potential opportunities for brands in new sectors. In addition, Gary will drive a programme of heavy investment to further strengthen BPT’s nationwide salesforce.
Gary lives in Swindon with wife Emma and their three children. Outside of work, he enjoys fitness and is currently training for the 2018 London Marathon. He will be running for the Jack Dowding Foundation, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
Birchwood Price Tools has completed a major Scruffs installation with Drews, based in Reading. The ironmonger’s flagship store underwent a major transformation with eye-catching shop front window dressing and the installation of a striking Scruffs Shop-in-Shop fixture.

Birchwood Price Tools is pleased to announce the arrival of Matt Hunt as its new Managing Director.
Matt , 42, has joined BPT from Rexel, where he was MD for electrical wholesalers WF Senate.
He has a strong retail and merchant background, having previously worked at Saint Gobain for its Gibbs & Dandy brand, and intends to bring this knowledge of merchanting and retailing needs to the supplier side, in his new role, to make BPT brands and products a ‘must stock’.
Matt says: “I’ve worked with many suppliers over the years, so I know what great looks like and the value they can add to the performance of a category”.
He is already investing in customer and end user insight to help him shape the look and feel of BPT’s ranges and service proposition going forward, in order to provide a complete solution to merchants and retailers.
“What excites me is the potential to make a material impact - the big, game-changing stuff. We are known for our innovation and what sparks innovation is knowing customer needs and spotting the gap. However, I want to focus not just on product development but the whole customer experience.”
Matt lives in Stratford Upon Avon with wife Sharon and their two daughters. Away from work, he is a keen golfer and rugby union and football fan.

On Monday 23rd January 2017, members of the BPT team (Mel Smith and Yvonne Mueller pictured middle left and middle right) met with Nick Crawford the Nottingham Children's Hospital charity manager and a children's play assistant to deliver a cheque on behalf of BPT.
In 2016, through various fundraising initiatives, the BPT team raised an impressive £12,797 for Nottingham Children’s Hospital. This is a fantastic total and will help towards the charity’s 2016 developments including decorating the corridors and bright play areas for all the children. The main initiative for the charity in 2017 is to build extra facilities for the parents staying with their children through donations and fundraising.

We’re delighted to tell you that Scruffs won the double at the 'On The Tools' Awards event which took place at The Emirates Stadium in London on Friday 11th November!
On the Tools (OTT) is the UK's biggest construction-related online community with over one million followers. At OTT’s first ever awards ceremony, BPT-owned Scruffs won both categories in which it had been nominated, taking 'Boot Brand' and 'Workwear Brand' of the Year.
Commenting on the win, Head of Scruffs Marketing Chris Mellor-Dolman said: “It’s fantastic news as the awards are voted for by the 'On The Tools' audience, who are mostly tradespeople.”
The two categories received over 8,000 votes from tradespeople, and Scruffs beat some pretty fierce competition, including:

Fundraising is through many different initiatives including cake sales, product sample sales, triathlons and more recently a 13,000ft skydive. The next event is fire walking! So far we’ve raised around £6k and we’re looking to raise £20k so all donations, however small, are greatly appreciated.

Last Autumn we moved our warehouse operation, a significant undertaking, which unfortunately impacted on the service levels some of our customers experienced. We’re pleased to report that service levels are now where they need to be; service OTIF on regular orders is consistently achieving 100% and customer feedback is very positive. We’re also increasing our stock holding to ensure key lines, for market leading brands such as Defender and Scruffs, are always in stock.
The new Scruffs ‘Shop-In-Shop’ merchandising solution was launched at the beginning of April. It replaces the existing High Street Fixture, which has been Scruffs' in-store set-up for over six years.
The new point-of-sale system offers many benefits for dealers, Aside the ease of self-build, it offers 33% more display space than the previous unit and looks visually striking. Different kit and accessory pack options to the standard base unit ensures a truly modular solution.

The business will be closed on May bank holiday Monday - 30th May. Any order placed on Friday 27th will be delivered on Tuesday 31st May unless a Saturday delivery request has been made. The delivery will then be made on Saturday 28th May.

Following a thorough review of our Power & Hand Tools business we took the decision to centralise our Selling and Commercial functions into our Nottingham Head Office effective from the 1st April. As a result, we closed our Summer Lane site in Birmingham on 31st March 2016 with a few members of staff transferring over to our Nottingham site.
Power & Hand Tools remain an important part of BPT’s product portfolio and centralising the Sales and Commercial functions will deliver benefits through a more efficient and clearer experience for our customers.

2015 saw a lot of marketing activity for Scruffs including a five week campaign on national radio during October. In independent research conducted towards the end of last year, Scruffs was confirmed as the UK’s fastest growing workwear brand, with significant increases in awareness and appeal amongst tradespeople.
This year will see continued investment in the brand both in terms of marketing and new product introductions. Never has there been a better time to become a Scruffs dealer!

7th December 2015 We’re delighted to announce that Scruffs-sponsored Adam Shelton is the new 2015 British Thundersport Superstock 1000 Champion.
In a season of spectacular thrills and dramatic spills, Adam beat his closest rivals and deservedly took the crown at the final round of the championship at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.
In addition to Adam’s raw talent, the win is all the more impressive when you consider that just two months previously he was undergoing major surgery for a double leg break, following his horrific 150mph crash at Rockingham. Sheer determination and bloody-mindedness has kept him on course to take the title as he continues to follow his dream of becoming a full Superbike rider.
Adam will ‘officially’ be presented with his 2015 British Thundersport Superstock 1000 trophy at an end-of-season award ceremony in January 2016.

Working in conjunction Scruffs’ PR partner agency, valuable local media coverage was secured for the SUPER DEALERS that included 103 insertions with local newspapers and radio stations to reach a total of 8.7 million people.

BPT recently exhibited Scruffs at the A+A Show in Düsseldorf, Germany. The key objective was to find large international distributors to help grow the brand, with the primary focus being Germany.
Highlights included the international launch of the new Scruffs GORE-TEX® safety footwear range, and the unveiling of the vast array of fantastic new clothing lines in the 2016 collection. Both received extensive interest from visitors.
The entire Scruffs product range was presented on a 90 square metre stand, which used a combination of curved product displays, attention-grabbing audio visual and water-based exhibits to drive key brand messages.
The 30th A+A Show, which ran for four days (27-30th October), comprised of 1,887 exhibitors from 57 countries and provided information for more than 65,000 visitors who came through the doors during the event - a new record. The crux of the show is for agents and distributors to meet the leading suppliers and manufacturers in the workwear, occupational health and safety, health promotion at work, and safety and security management sectors. Over 30% of all visitors were non-German internationals, who came from 80 countries around the globe.
At the beginning of September, BPT appointed ten Scruffs Independent Super Dealers. With over 50 applications, the successful dealers were appointed on the basis of having met numerous criteria related to sales and promotion of the Scruffs brand.
Scruffs Super Dealers will benefit from an exclusive support package including merchandising, digital assets, marketing literature and events. A brand new Scruffs trailer will be on tour up and down the country, as the centre piece to the Super Dealer launch. Events will be held at the premises of Super Dealers for their customers with local media in support to increase awareness and interest. The first event will take place on Tuesday 13th October with a further eight events at different locations throughout October and November.
A new high-profile 'Are You #SCRUFFSENOUGH?' ad campaign, launched today on TalkSPORT and Absolute Radio. Running for five weeks, between 6am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday, the campaign will reach 51% of all UK tradespeople. The ads promote the Scruffs Autumn/Winter Collection featuring the all new Scruffs GORE-TEX footwear line.
The two characters in the ads are played by: John Henshaw (The 'Gaffer'), who's best known for roles as Ken Dixon - the landlord in 'Early Doors', Wilf Bradshaw in 'Born and Bred', and PC Roy Bramwell in 'The Cops' and Andrew Ellis (The '#SCRUFFSENOUGH' builder) best known as 'Gadget' in 'This is England'.
The radio campaign is being supported by an online campaign, featuring four films and in-store POS.

Birchwood Price Tools (BPT) announced it is making a significant financial investment in infrastructure and logistics in order to improve service for customers.
As part of the investment programme, the warehouse operation will be managed out of a new 600,000 ft2 purpose built, state-of-the-art, logistics facility in Warrington. Greater accuracy of inventory and availability, together with scope for expansion and flexibility, will deliver improved levels of service to our customers.
The warehousing move from Birch Park, BPT’s Nottingham head office site, will take place during July and August, with all BPT deliveries being despatched from Warrington from September.
The launch of our new Defender LED Luminator Floodlight Tower is underway. This is a fantastic product offering numerous features and benefits; thanks to its 360’ light spread, it lights up half a football field with just one unit. It boasts solid eco credentials with reduced power modes for energy saving and directional light helping reduces light pollution on sites near residential areas. Additionally the unit runs on standard 110V supply and compared to traditional generator light towers, can be set up in hard to reach locations - ideal for site use. This temporary light solution is ideal for large maintenance sites, highways, motorways and events.
Final preparations are underway prior to the launch of our new dealer ordering website which will make it far easier to order from BPT. With technical and user testing underway, final tweaks will be made before announcing the final launch date.
